Oakland Private Middle School

Current day educators and administrators are challenged to provide welcoming, safe, and appropriately designed restrooms that serve the needs of all students. At this middle school in Oakland, CA the school diversity committee, comprised primarily of students, led the charge to provide non-binary bathroom options for their middle school. The administration, in response, is working with All Gender Design to explore options to remodel the existing middle school bathrooms to provide options for all students. Their goal, to communicate their support of diversity, needs to be expressed in the physical space of the bathrooms, not just a removal of signs.

In the Schematic Design Phase, we explored options that will meet current building code regulation, that range in scope of work in consideration of budget, and reflects the students’ and administrations’ stance and goals to celebrate diversity.
