Design Consultation

When you hire All Gender Design for a design consultation we will provide assistance to school administrators, teachers, parents and committees to help everyone understand the basics of gender and how it affects bathroom use and the physical bathroom space.

The planning and design of the bathroom – including access, sink areas and toilet vestibules – varies due to the specific nature of every school’s culture, goals, students, budget and existing space. As a result, each project is as unique as the school community it serves. We work with the team and find the best solution by understanding all of the concerns, identifying possible issues and proposing the most appropriate design options.

A design consultation can be a stand alone service. In this scenario we would not serve as the architect of record for the project but assist the school and the architecture firm the school has already selected.

Architectural Planning
Architectural Planning starts with a Design Consultation and can include Master Planning, Design Development, Construction Drawings, Permit Acquisition and Construction Administration. Our collective team has over 20 years of experience in school design and we bring all of our resources to each project we undertake.
All Gender Educational Workshops

Working together with Gender Spectrum, we provide Educational Workshops tailored for schools interested in exploring how bathroom use and design might better serve all students. The workshops begin with an overall discussion and presentation on gender. With that knowledge in place all participants are then equally informed about the issues and opportunities. This process allows the whole team to arrive on the same page regardless of previous knowledge or experience. A well-informed organization can then better define goals and future projects for their school.

At the conclusion of the gender presentation we then discuss specific design scenarios and precedents that highlight the physical and spatial elements that relate to safe and comfortable bathroom use for all. Some of the precedents we explore are school projects that All Gender Design consulted on and others are projects we admire from afar. While each school and project is unique, we’ve found that the community and design processes other schools have undertaken can teach important lessons even in different contexts.
